Former president Herbert Hoover said this in 1944 when young Americans were dying in World War 2. But it is a timeless truth that applies in every nation and every epoch.

The Second World War was an incredibly painful conflict, but the young men who fought it came back home to be honored as heroes. This would not be true for many of those who fought for the United States in the armed conflicts that were to follow. Especially Vietnam, a war that divided the country and shattered an entire generation.

We have heard many of the tragic stories from the Vietnam War. But we have rarely seen how the devastating conflict impacted the lives of Latinos and Chicanos - until now.

The Vietnam War

In Soul Sacrifice, a play currently running at the Casa 101 Theater in Boyle Heights, we are given a chance to see how the Vietnam War impacted one Chicano family and the long-term tragedy that it left in its wake.

Written by playwright Consuelo G. Flores and directed by Kenneth Castillo, it is a heart-wrenching work that transcends cultural and generational divides. And it uncovers the often-forgotten history of Latino soldiers in Vietnam and the struggles of war protestors from the Chicano community back at home.

The play follows the Flores family in the 1960s and 1970s, whose simple world is turned upside down by a conflict in Southeast Asia that is far removed from their daily struggles as working-class Mexican immigrants to the United States.

Bookended by the funeral of one of the family members, the play flashes back to a happier time when 9-year-old Connie spends her afternoons reading the newspaper to her father Jose, who works at a slaughterhouse to provide for his devoutly religious wife Guadelupe and their older children.

Rachel, a teenage girl who is more interested in building a family with her first love than in going to college as her mother wants for her. Ben, who is an idealistic youth that dreams of becoming a lawyer and fighting for immigrant rights. And Luis, a good-hearted boy that is dedicated to being the glue that holds the family together.

Lives Upended

But their normal lives are upended when Luis is drafted and sent to Vietnam, where he endures horrific tragedies that leave him emotionally scarred. While Luis fights overseas, Ben joins the battle at home as activist groups rally Chicano immigrants to protest a war that is seeing a disproportionate number of casualties among its brown and black soldiers.

The intense politicization of the conflict threatens to tear the family apart, with Jose opposing Ben’s activism even as Guadelupe prays fervently for Luis to come home alive and in one piece.

Luis does return physically whole, but he is psychologically damaged and suffering from PTSD which makes him prone to violent and unpredictable behavior that soon threatens the safety of his loved ones. Luis is forced to choose between staying at home with his frightened family, or running away for their own safety.

And his choices forever change the once happy Flores home.

A Powerful Play

The show is a powerful and intimate look at the devastation that war leaves in the hearts and minds of those who return from the battlefield, and may be difficult to watch for those whose own families have been torn apart by recent conflicts in the Middle East.

But it is exactly because those conflicts are happening again right now that Soul Sacrifice is a desperately needed examination of what may be facing those who are about to enter the latest cycle of Abel and Cain, where brother kills brother.

Playwright Flores’s haunting script is based on her own family’s experiences, and the authenticity shows in the dialogue and emotional impact of the story. Castillo’s directing is top notch, with the play feeling kinetic even on a small stage in Boyle Heights. And his casting choices are superb. Every single actor felt like the perfect person for the role.

I especially admired Martin Morales, whose performance as Jose alternates from affectionate, to humorous, to imperious and proud – the full range of a man who suffers regular humiliation as a Mexican immigrant while refusing to let his dignity be sacrificed even as he spends his days toiling to feed his family.

As the son of an immigrant father who went through many of the same struggles, Morales made me remember my late dad and tear up several times.

I strongly encourage people of all backgrounds and ages to go see Soul Sacrifice. Sadly, its message of surviving the brutality of war and its aftermath is needed just as much today as it was sixty years ago.

And this play will haunt you and make you think long after the curtain falls.

The story of Chicano punk is as much about defiance and frustration as it is about a bold reinvention of identity. Starting in the late ’60s and early ’70s, Chicano rock bands like El Chicano, Thee Midniters, and Malo were at the forefront of a cultural movement, blending rock, jazz, and Mexican folk music to celebrate and affirm Chicano identity.

Their music was vibrant, full of pride, and unapologetically Chicano at a time when Mexican-American voices were still marginalized in mainstream media.

But by the late ’70s, a new sound was beginning to pulse through the streets of East Los Angeles: the raw, fast-paced, and rebellious beat of punk. For many young Chicanos, punk was a perfect fit. The genre’s rejection of mainstream culture, DIY attitude, and readiness to tackle social issues made it ideal for expressing the frustrations and identity struggles that were part of everyday life in the barrios.

Bands like The Plugz and The Zeros burst onto the scene, blending punk’s gritty style with a uniquely Chicano perspective. Where Chicano rock had celebrated cultural pride through smooth melodies and soulful lyrics, Chicano punk was aggressive and brash, channeling the anger and alienation that many young Mexican-Americans felt.

The Plugz were among the first to make their mark, infusing punk with Latin influences and Spanish lyrics, making a bold statement about their dual identity.

Anti-Establishment

The changing socio-political landscape was one of the biggest catalysts for the shift from rock to punk. The height of the Chicano Movement in the ’60s and early ’70s had given way to disillusionment by the late ’70s. Many younger Chicanos felt that the idealism of their parents’ generation hadn’t translated into meaningful change. Instead of the unity-focused messages of Chicano rock, they wanted to shout about their frustrations with systemic issues like police brutality, discrimination, and limited opportunities.

The Zeros, often dubbed the “Mexican Ramones,” brought the intensity of punk’s rebelliousness to this conversation, challenging mainstream America and the traditional narratives within their communities. Chicano punk wasn’t just about sound—it was about rejecting expectations. Punk as a genre was fiercely anti-establishment and embraced a raw, unfiltered aesthetic that resonated with young Chicanos who felt stifled by mainstream society and their communities’ conventional expectations.

In that sense, Chicano punk told the world, “We’re here, we’re loud, and we don’t fit your stereotypes.” This sentiment resonated with audiences who found in Chicano punk music that it wasn’t just an escape but a weapon against marginalization. Los Illegals and The Brat exemplified this with songs that echoed the punk ethos of independence and the struggle for identity in a bicultural world.

Another factor in this transition was the punk scene’s accessibility. Unlike Chicano rock, which often required access to instruments, recording studios, and music networks, punk was about doing things yourself. This stripped-down approach appealed to young Chicanos who might not have had access to professional gear but were ready to make music with whatever they had.

Punk’s DIY culture allowed them to create their own spaces, where they didn’t need anyone’s approval to express themselves. Shows happened in basements, garages, and community centers rather than high-end venues, making the music feel closer to the people. This independence became crucial for the growth of the Chicano punk scene and allowed these artists to maintain control over their message and image.

Chicano punk wasn’t just a reaction to society’s constraints but a radical act of cultural reclamation.

Punk allowed these musicians to take pride in their identity while reshaping it. They were Mexican-American and punk—not one or the other, but a blend of both worlds that created something new. By performing songs in both English and Spanish, bands like The Plugz conveyed that Chicano punk wasn’t just about imitation but innovation. This cultural hybridity resonated with fans navigating similar identities, making Chicano punk an expression of pride, resistance, and belonging.

British Punk Rock

One interesting aspect of this evolution is how it parallels other punk scenes globally. Just as British punk bands were tackling issues like class inequality and American punk was rebelling against corporate culture, Chicano punk grappled with issues of race, identity, and community. The similarities between The Clash’s socially conscious lyrics and the critiques embedded in Chicano punk songs highlight how universal punk’s message of resistance was.

But Chicano punk had its own voice that spoke to Mexican-Americans’ unique challenges and experiences in a way that mainstream punk couldn’t. By the time the Chicano punk scene had established itself, it was pushing back against mainstream America and challenging the boundaries within the Chicano community itself. Traditional family and cultural heritage values were strong in the Mexican-American community, but Chicano punk challenged these norms by embracing individualism, rejecting authority, and breaking down barriers.

This wasn’t always met with enthusiasm by older generations, who often saw punk’s defiance as rejecting Mexican values. However, for young Chicanos, punk was about carving out their own space—a space where they could explore what it meant to be Chicano without being confined by their parents’ expectations.

Hungry For Change

Ultimately, Chicano punk is a testament to the power of music as a form of social commentary and personal expression. It represents a moment when young Mexican-Americans took hold of a global movement and made it their own, creating music that was as much about identity as it was about rebellion.

For fans today, listening to bands like The Plugz, The Zeros, and Los Illegals is like looking into a time capsule that captures the spirit of a generation hungry for change, unafraid to be loud, and determined to make a mark. ✔

In the beginning, it was a vague idea, the approximate and inhospitable edge of the Spanish Empire and the beginning of no man’s land.

At the end of the 18th century, the primitive United States of America was far from the nation that would soon become Mexico. Even more “recently,” in the middle of the 19th century, the border between Mexico and the States was only a line drawn on a piece of paper, a porous boundary with no man-made barriers.

Mexico was officially born at the end of 1821. So for two centuries now, along two thousand miles, Mexicans and Americans have had a bittersweet neighborhood.

How The Line Came To Be

The line from San Diego/Tijuana to Brownsville/Matamoros is as large as Western Europe. It measures just about 2 thousand miles from the Pacific Ocean to the Gulf of Mexico, a distance equivalent from Madrid to Warsaw. It passes through fertile valleys, white deserts resembling the Sahara, mountainous areas and wetlands. It has a culture of its own and even, in the opinion of some linguists, an incipient language, Spanglish.

The border of the United States and Mexico is its own country.

The first physical demarcation of the frontier by the International Boundary Commission wasn’t solid at all: after the Mexican War (1846-1848) the team built a series of 276 obelisks—which remain to this day—every few miles from El Paso to the twin cities of Tijuana and San Diego.

The obelisks, about two meters high, still stand as mute witnesses of that first physical demarcation. Some are in urban areas, others in private farms, some in more inhospitable regions and others on the top of the highest mountains.

A Small Exodus

The first great migration between the two countries went from north to south. With the defeat of the Confederate States, thousands of refugees and defeated troops fled into Mexico in sufficient numbers to alarm both the triumphant Union and the Juarez republican government. But Mexico’s Maximilian Imperial Government was pleased to see the flow of what he considered diligent workers and loyal supporters of his Empire.

In the last week of the American Civil War, 10,000 men crossed the Rio Grande into Mexico, some of them with their families, determined to begin a new life. Imperial officers at the borderline let the refugees cross the border at several points without bothering them.

It is not clear how many Southerners finally arrived in Mexico. Some may have assimilated into their new country, but most of them probably returned to the States once Maximilian’s Empire crumbled down in 1867.

Once their respective internal wars were over, the neighbors observed each other again: Mexicans witnessed how the North began its reconstruction with fractured infrastructure, and a divided and resentful population. The Americans eagle-eyed the consolidation of a southern nation that had passed through half a century of revolutions, finally reaching stability with the arrival of president Porfirio Diaz.

The Second Great Migration

At the beginning of the 20th century, there were still no fences, no signs, except for the obelisks planted in 1851. Mexicans could freely cross the border without anyone stopping them, the same for the Americans going south.

At last, after many attempts, the occupation of the desolate northern territories began, accompanied by a beneficial exchange for both sides. In 1889, the city of Tijuana was founded with a purely tourist vocation: to entertain Californians who crossed in search of what they saw as a decadent culture of leisure and recreation.

In 1903, the twin cities of Mexicali and Calexico were created. Ciudad Juárez, which had existed since 1659 as “El Paso del Norte,” became the most important border city during the Diaz administration.

For many years, Mexicans swam across the Rio Grande unmolested or walked through the deserts of New Mexico and California. That relative informality of almost half a century changed at the beginning of the Mexican Revolution in 1910.

An Early Mass Deportation

But even then, the controls were still far from rigorous: the only requirement to cross the border was to identify and take a bath to “get disinfected.” In 1917, a new immigration law required Mexicans to prove they were literate.

More importantly, the United States needed all these people: the beginning of World War I brought a dramatic decline in European immigration, the ban on immigration from Asia, and thus an impressive increase in labor demand, which the Mexicans fulfilled.

The trend suffered a severe setback in the 1930s, the Great Depression reduced the demand for Mexican workers to zero and a policy of mass deportation was implemented for the first time. During the 1930s between half a million and one million Mexicans and their American-born children were deported.

The “Bracero” Era

In 1942, the US went from mass deportation to official request of Mexican workers. With World War II, the army and the fields demanded more personnel, and the farms required men to replace the lost arms.

California farmers voiced their concern that there would be a shortage of labor for the harvest of 1942 and they requested the US government to bring in 100,000 Mexican workers.

This was the beginning of the Bracero Program.

In the first year, 4,200 full-service Mexican workers entered the states. Three years later the number increased to 62,000. But the program was too beneficial for the economy of the American farmers, who demanded that it continued for a few more years. In 1956 the number of legal “braceros” reached a historical maximum of 450,000 migrant workers, until it was finally canceled in 1964.

The Third Wave

The current situation began with the end of the long period of stability and growth in Mexico, an era known as “stabilizing development.” The “third major wave” of migration, again from south to north, began in the mid-70’s and continues to this day. It was the onset of one of the largest continuous migratory flows in the history of the United States.

In the 21st century the border has urgent issues: environmental pollution, water, crime, gangs and drugs, poverty, public health and safety, education and inadequate infrastructure, to name a few.

Today, the three central issues that dominate the U.S.-Mexico relationship are drugs, immigration, and security. Author Timothy Brown has imaginatively pictured the border as “schizoid set of Siamese twins physically joined at a hundred points and unable to survive apart.”

Only in this case, the treatment is not the surgical separation of the twins, but following that old adage: neighbors by chance, friends by choice.

In March 1968, thousands of Mexican-American students walked out of East Los Angeles high schools to protest segregation, corporal punishment, and a system that denied them dignity.

The East L.A. Walkouts, known as the “Blowouts,” weren’t just about education; they were a collective declaration that Chicano youth mattered. Their protest was fueled by word of mouth, community ties, and the kind of solidarity that spread from classrooms to neighborhoods.

That same spirit of unity, that electric sense of belonging, still exists today. It has simply evolved. Where once students gathered on school lawns, now they gather on screens. Where news of a protest once spread through flyers or whispered plans among friends, it now travels through posts, hashtags, and livestreams.

The medium has changed, but the message—justice, identity, pride—remains the same.

The Rhythm Of The People

Louie Pérez of Los Lobos once said, “You didn’t have to go on a picket line to absorb the impact of the Chicano Movement of the ’60s and ’70s.”

His words capture something essential about how activism transcends its physical boundaries. During that era, activism extended not only to marches but also to music, art, and everyday acts of resistance.

Bands like El Chicano, Tierra, Malo, Thee Midniters, Azteca, Tower of Power, SAPO, and many more transformed music into a powerful tool for solidarity, performing benefit concerts for César Chávez and singing songs that carried pride and defiance in equal measure.

You didn’t have to take a sign to feel the change; it was in the air, the art, the rhythm of the people.

Today’s generation embodies that same truth. Many young Chicanos are still protesting, organizing, and mobilizing in the streets, but they’re also doing so through the digital realm. Social media has become the new word of mouth, a modern organizing tool that can instantly reach thousands. A post, a story, can rally support, spread information, or amplify injustice in seconds.

Where once messages were passed from friend to friend or student to student, now they can ripple across cities and countries.

Collective Effervescence

Critics sometimes dismiss digital activism as shallow, claiming that reposting a story or sharing a hashtag isn’t “real activism.” But that view overlooks the deeper social function of communication and connection.

As Pérez’s quote reminds us, activism has always taken many forms—it’s not just about marching but about feeling, expressing, and spreading awareness. It’s about absorbing the movement, allowing it to permeate culture and into everyday life.

Sociologist Émile Durkheim described this phenomenon as collective effervescence, the energy and unity people feel when they come together for a shared cause. That feeling coursed through the crowds of the 1968 Walkouts, but it also pulses through online movements today.

When young people flood timelines with calls for justice, when digital art commemorates Chicano heroes, or when TikTok videos remix protest songs with modern beats, that same effervescence is alive. The collective emotion binds people, even across digital distance.

At the same time, cultural theorist Stuart Hall’s concept of cultural resistance helps explain why these new forms of expression matter. For Hall, culture itself is a site of struggle—a place where power is contested and identity is shaped. Social media, with all its flaws, has become that space for Chicanos and Latinos today.

Platforms like Instagram and TikTok function as virtual barrios, where stories are shared, histories retold, and pride performed. Through memes, reels, poetry, and art, young people are claiming visibility and rewriting narratives once controlled by others.

The Importance Of Music

Music continues to play a decisive role in this continuum of activism. Just as the Chicano Movement of the 1960s found its soundtrack in Santana or Malo, today’s generation has to name a few artists, such as Cuco, The Red Pears, Omar Apollo, and Bad Bunny, musicians who blend genres and identities while carrying forward themes of love, struggle, and belonging.

When their music plays over protest footage or accompanies social media montages celebrating Chicano heritage, it’s not just background—it’s the latest verse in a decades-long anthem of resistance.

The tools have evolved—from picket signs to posts, from marches to livestreams—but the purpose remains the same. The Chicano spirit of unity, pride, and self-determination endures. Each generation builds on the last, using whatever medium is available to speak truth and demand visibility.

Half a century ago, the students of East L.A. proved that change could start with a walkout. Today’s youth prove it can also start with a post. The spark of the movement hasn’t dimmed; it’s just found new ways to light the path forward.

Baseball in the United States is known as a National Pastime. However, just south of the border, it was a full-time passion for many in Latin America. In fact, by 1864 there were leagues in Cuba, Mexico, Nicaragua, and Venezuela.

The first Latino to play professional baseball in the U.S was Cuban star, Esteban Enrique Bellán, who was white-passing. However, when Jackie Robinson signed with the Brooklyn Dodgers, not only did it lift “The Iron Curtain” for African Americans, but also Afro-Latinos.

Black Latinos in Baseball

Some Latinos were able to bend the rules because of their skin color, but they were never considered “superstars” by the general public or media before 1947—except for one. His name was Adolfo Lugue from Havana Cuba, and he was considered a “white-Cuban.” In 1923, Adolfo won 27 games for the Cincinnati Reds and went on to play for 20 years.

Although he reached success, the majority of light-skinned Latino players of that time had a brief run with the league. In the 1950s, that started to change. In 1951, we saw the first two Latinos in MLB history make the All-Star game.

The first was Orestes “Minnie” Miñoso, also known as “The Cuban Comet.” The second was Alfonso Carrasquel Colón, or “Chico Carrasquel” from Caracas Venezuela. 

Their success opened the door for Afro-Latinos to join the league. It also made it acceptable for the general public and the media to accept Afro-Latinos in baseball and as superstars. In the 1950s, the game became rapidly popular across the U.S. We saw the rise of Roberto Clemente, Orlando Cepeda, and Luis Aparicio during this time.

These three later would become the first Latinos inducted into the National Baseball Hall of Fame.

The Latino Influx

The increase of Latino players in the league in the 1950s allowed the MLB to expand. From 1961 to 1969 the league went from 16 teams to 24, and today the number is 30. By 1970, Latinos playing in the MLB was common and accepted. As a result, it allowed them to apply more influence on the game and gain more support from the general public.

Roberto Clemente was inducted into the Hall of Fame in 1973 after his tragic death. In the next 37 elections, only five more Latinos were selected for the Hall of Fame. That number since has doubled.

The influence Latin America has on the sport of baseball was demonstrated in the initial World Baseball Classic that was held in March 2006. The competition was organized for 16 teams to compete against each other. Of the 16 teams, six of them were from Latin America: Mexico, Panama, Cuba, Venezuela, Dominican Republic, and Puerto Rico.

This showed the world the strength of the sport in the region with its fan base and the production of athletes (Cuba, a small island country made it to the finals, where they lost to Japan).

The increased drive to make it to the MLB doesn’t come from just the love of the game, but also the league’s marketing strategy towards the region for a lucrative career.

In professional baseball, nineteen of the 30 teams offer Spanish radio programming for their audience. Plus, across South America, Central America, and the Caribbean games are available in the Spanish language through ESPNdeportes, ESPN+, ESPN2, as well as each regional area that offers their local programming for the games.

Today, Latinos make up 31.9 percent of the league, just behind white players at 57.5%. But out of the 30 teams, there are only two Black coaches (Dusty Baker and Dave Roberts), and four Latino coaches (Luis Rojas, Charlie Montoyo, Alex Cora, and Dave Martinez).

The wait is over—you can now watch the first official trailer for Louder Than Borderz: A Firme History of Chicano Music Fest, a forthcoming documentary that brings one of the West Coast’s most influential cultural music events to the screen.

Directed by Brandon Loran Maxwell, the project marks Chela Media’s third major release in three years, following American Homeboy (Apple TV) and Defiant History (Tubi).

With each film, Maxwell has continued to explore the intersection of culture, identity, and community—this time turning the lens toward a musical tradition that has helped define generations.

Louder Than Borderz centers on Chicano Music Fest, an annual gathering that celebrates the diversity of Chicano music. The documentary will highlight performances and stories from artists across R&B and West Coast hip hop, including The Delfonics, The Temptations, Conejo, King Lil G, Baby Bash, Mr. Lil One, and more.

In addition to live performances, the film will incorporate rare archival footage from past festivals, offering a deeper look at how the event has evolved while continuing to serve as a cultural anchor for the community.

The documentary is expected to premiere on Daily Chela’s YouTube platform and additional streaming services in early 2027.

Chicano Music Fest will take place June 7, 2025, at La Plaza de Cultura y Artes in downtown Los Angeles. Tickets are available online.

Immigrant Entrepreneurs

Iconic American brands like Budweiser and McDonald's weren’t just influenced by immigrants—they were started by them or their families. Adolphus Busch, a German immigrant, helped build Budweiser into a national powerhouse. Ray Kroc, the son of immigrants, transformed McDonald’s into one of the most recognizable brands in the world.

Companies like these exist because immigrants took risks, built from nothing, and scaled ideas into institutions.

According to the Partnership for a New American Economy, about 40 percent of Fortune 500 companies trace their roots to immigrants or their children. Those companies generate hundreds of billions in revenue and employ millions of people.

Yet critics persist in framing immigrants, particularly undocumented immigrants, as a burden. They claim immigrants come here to exploit public programs like Medicare en masse.

Nonsense. The data tells a different story. Research published in Health Affairs shows undocumented immigrants pay $13.8 billion more into Medicare than they take out. Meanwhile, U.S.-born citizens draw significantly more than they contribute, creating a deficit.

The same misleading narrative arises when the conversation turns to crime. Blame immigrants first, ask questions later. It’s a claim repeated so often that it begins to feel intuitive, yet it isn’t supported by evidence.

In fact, the data points in the opposite direction.

A study by the Public Policy Institute of California found that native-born men are ten times more likely to be incarcerated than immigrants. In other words, borders don’t determine behavior, people do.

A Broken Bureaucratic System

The problem is not immigrants coming to America. It is the system they encounter when they try to do it legally. The U.S. immigration process is slow, tangled, and frankly, a complete disaster.

People wait years for decisions. Paperwork stalls. Cases disappear into bureaucratic limbo. And when legal pathways fail, we shouldn’t be surprised that some turn to alternatives. A broken system doesn’t stop demand, it redirects it.

History has already shown us where that leads. During Prohibition, the federal government tried to eliminate a behavior by force. Instead, it created black markets and empowered organized crime. Immigration policy risks repeating that mistake. When we choke off legal entry, we don’t end migration, we push it underground.

That is why calls to round up and deport 11 million people are unrealistic. They ignore the reality that most immigrants live here legally, and many undocumented immigrants simply overstayed visas. These are not abstract numbers, but rather workers, neighbors, and families already woven into the fabric of American life.

At the core of this issue is why people come here in the first place. They come for the same reasons generations before them did—to find opportunity, to escape instability, to build a future.

That drive built the United States. It still does.

We can respond to that reality with fear or respond with clarity. Immigrants are not a threat to the American story, they are central to it. They always have been. And if the country wants to remain dynamic, competitive, and true to its own ideals, they always will be. ✔️

I had the pleasure of interviewing the legendary Chicano Rock and East LA Sound pioneer, Mark Guerrero, in April of 2024. Mark is the son of the legendary Lalo Guerrero, the “father of Chicano music.”

By 13, he was performing with his band, Mark & the Escorts, sharing bills with East LA legends like Cannibal & the Headhunters, The Premiers, The Blendells, Thee Midniters, Thee Ambertones, and many, many more. The group also recorded two singles in 1965, “Get Your Baby” and “Dance With Me,” helping define the emerging East L.A. sound. He came up with these bands, and they all made their bones together.

Guerrero continued to evolve with the scene, later leading the Men From S.O.U.N.D. and Nineteen Eighty-Four, before launching his solo career with “Lila, Love Me Tonight,” produced by Lou Adler. He followed that with Capitol Records singles like “Rock & Roll Queen” and “I’m Brown,” and later formed Tango, whose early ’70s recordings would later gain renewed recognition as part of the Chicano rock canon.

In this conversation, Guerrero reflects on that trajectory—on the eras he lived through, the shifts in sound, and how Chicano artists have continued to evolve across decades.

When I asked him if he stayed up to date on new Latino bands, Mark mentioned artists like Chicano Batman and Thee Sinseers. He noted that while there are many different genres now, that variety is exactly what makes him proud of the community.

To Mark, the story of East LA music is one of constant survival through adaptation. “Chicanos and Chicanas and East LA artists have always moved with the times,” he explained.

He traced a direct lineage from his own era in the 60s and 70s into the punk movement that followed, noting how bands like Los Illegals and The Brat proved the neighborhood’s sound couldn’t be boxed in. From artists playing cumbias and jazz to modern acts like La Santa Cecilia, Mark sees a relentless creative drive. “We’ve gone through all these genres,” he said, “and we continue to evolve.”

However, Mark was candid about how today’s industry stacks up against the era he helped define. As we discussed the current state of pop, he admitted to a certain prejudice for the late 60s and early 70s. “I think that is the greatest period for rock and pop music,” he said. “The greatest artists, the greatest records, and the greatest songs were in that period.”

While he acknowledges that you’ll still find the occasional great song or a really talented artist today, he feels the sheer volume of brilliance from the 20th century remains untouchable. He argued that he could list 100 artists from that time who simply don’t have a modern equivalent. “Generally speaking, if you look at the charts, man, it’s pretty bleak,” he added.

Despite his critique of the mainstream, Mark’s outlook for the local scene remains optimistic. He ended our conversation by returning to the talent still emerging from the community. Even if the industry at large feels lackluster to him, he knows the heart of the movement hasn’t stopped beating. “A lot of Chicanos,” he reminded me, “are still making good music.” It is a sentiment that resonates deeply with me when looking at the current music scene.

There is a new wave of bands keeping that spirit alive and well, proving that the foundation laid by previous generations is being built upon with incredible fervor. Bands like Barrio Slam, a Chicano hardcore outfit, directly evoke the themes of the Chicano Movement through powerful tracks such as “Aztec Blood,” “Xicano Hardcore,” and “Brown Pride World.”

Meanwhile, the indie-alternative group Chicano Mosh and the psychedelic cumbia punk band Tropa Magica offer sounds that feel hauntingly familiar yet entirely groundbreaking.

The reach of this modern movement extends to the Tex-Mex punk rock of Piñata Protest, which is currently bringing its high-energy accordion riffs to a national audience on tour with Reverend Horton Heat. Rounding out this resurgence is a great band I saw a month ago, The Killing Floors, a Chicano rock and roll band keeping the sound and style of 60s garage rock alive and well.

All of these artists are doing more than just playing notes; they are preserving a proud legacy. By blending the historical weight of their predecessors with contemporary innovation, they ensure that the Chicano musical identity remains a powerful, evolving force. It is a joyful realization to see that the torch has not only been passed but is burning brighter than ever, fueled by a new generation that continues to create great, meaningful music with undeniable pride.

For decades, the Chicano Movement stood as a powerful force for civil rights, cultural identity, and political representation among Mexican Americans. Born out of the struggles of the 1960s, it helped reshape the national conversation around race, labor, education, and justice.

But is the movement still relevant in its original form, or has it become a relic of a different era?

The answer is not so straightforward.

A Shifting Political Identity

Nothing points to how much things have changed more than politics. There was a time when Latinos were considered a reliable Democrat voting bloc, particularly during the civil rights era when the Democratic Party was arguably at its pop cultural peak.

But those days are long gone. The Democrat Party is no longer cool. Latino voters today are politically diverse and increasingly independent. Nearly half supported Republican candidates in the last election (including many Mexican Americans), and polling shows growing divisions across a wide spectrum of social and political issues.

In an age where voters are more cynical than ever, no single party commands the Latino vote. On one hand, economic concerns, public safety, and small business priorities have driven some toward the Republican Party. On the other, environmental concerns, immigration, and corporate accountability have driven some toward the Democrat Party.

The result? A community that can no longer be easily categorized—and a Chicano Movement that can no longer assume a unified political base.

In many ways, the success of the Chicano Movement itself complicates its modern identity. Many of its original goals (for example, greater access to education, increased political representation, and stronger legal protections) have all seen meaningful progress.

But that progress, however imperfect it may be, raises a difficult question: What happens to a movement built on urgent injustice when that urgency begins to evolve?

There is also another elephant in the room. Many cities and social programs that have long depended on Democratic leadership continue to struggle with persistent poverty, homelessness, crime, and failing schools (I say this as someone who lives on the West Coast).

For many, this calls into question whether long-standing political loyalties are producing the outcomes that were once promised (I would argue they are not).

Fractures Within the Movement

Complicating matters are fractures within the Chicano Movement itself. What was once seen as a unified struggle has since become contested, particularly as younger generations revisit the legacy of its most iconic figures.

The reassessment of Cesar Chavez amid allegations of sexual misconduct underscores this broader shift. While he remains widely respected for organizing farmworkers, his legacy is being increasingly viewed through a critical lens.

Dolores Huerta, another towering figure of the Chicano Movement, has faced criticism of her own in recent years. Though she remains a respected advocate for civil rights, some of her more recent political positions have drawn pushback from those who feel they reflect an out-of-touch worldview.

Yet these debates are not about individuals. They reflect a deeper divide. Mexican Americans today engage with issues through different frameworks, prioritizing different issues in ways that do not always align with the rhetoric or priorities of past leaders.

What once felt like a shared cause now feels like a collection of competing perspectives, particularly in the age of social media where everyone has a platform.

Chicano Politics vs. Chicano Culture

Those perspectives vary wildly. While immigration remains an important issue for many Latinos (myself included), it is not the top priority for all Latinos, despite how the mainstream media portrays it.

In fact, polling shows that concerns like inflation, cost of living, jobs, and housing all consistently rank higher in terms of importance, underscoring a community focused as much on economic stability as on immigration policy.

Likewise, internal debate continues across a wide range of social and economic issues, with Mexican Americans far from unified in their views.

In many ways, it could be argued that the cultural side of “Chicanismo” has proven far more resilient than its political counterpart. Lowriding is as vibrant as ever, and Chicano art, fashion, and music continue to shape global pop culture.

Notably, many of today’s most prominent Chicano figures are not political leaders at all, but rather individuals who embrace a Chicano cultural identity and operate on their own terms.

By contrast, the actual politics associated with 1960s-esque “Chicanismo” exhibit little power or influence over anything meaningful in today’s political climate. Quite the opposite. For many younger Latinos, the language and symbolism of the original Chicano Movement feel more distant than anything pressing or immediate.

This growing disconnect feeds a broader perception that today’s political leaders are woefully out of touch. Perhaps they are not wrong about everything, but they are rooted in an era that no longer reflect the experiences of a new generation.

Which leaves the Chicano Movement at a crossroads. If it wishes to survive, it is no longer enough to rely on the moral authority or political assumptions of a different era. Movements, like the societies they seek to shape, must evolve or risk becoming irrelevant.

What does the future of “Chicanismo” look like?

I see two paths going forward. On one hand, I see a movement slowly fading into obscurity—a movement remembered as a powerful force rooted in a different era. On the other, I see a movement with the potential to be reshaped by a new generation of leaders prepared to meet modern concerns.

In either case, history suggests that no movement remains unchanged forever. That’s just the truth. The real question is whether movements adapt, or get replaced entirely. ✔️

An American flag rippled in the breeze as a lifted pickup truck rumbled past us. A cloud of dust whipped skyward in its wake.

My wife squeezed the palm of my hand with a face that registered somewhere between concerned and amused.

“I think you’re outnumbered here,” she said.

I forced a smile. In the distance, I noticed a dozen more pickup trucks parked alongside the curb, surrounded by men guzzling beer in lawn chairs.

She was right. I wasn’t in the city anymore. I stood out like a sore thumb. For all they knew, I was just another cholo from the mugshot on Fox News. I would be lucky to survive the night.

I had come for the cars. I love cars. Two weeks earlier, I had been at a lowrider show in downtown Los Angeles. Now I was in the backcountry of Oregon, searching for a once-a-year car show—a gathering rumored to be unlike anything else in the country.

Still, I had my reservations. The last time I wandered into the backwoods of Oregon, it ended in a fistfight. The time before that too. I wasn’t exactly looking for another.

At the end of the street sat a roadside restaurant. Its neon sign buzzed and flickered above a gravel lot. Every time the door opened, a wave of country music spilled out, chased by laughter.

“Let’s grab something quick to eat,” she said.

“Might as well,” I replied.

We stepped inside. The place felt like a time capsule—saloon-style doors, peanut shells scattered across the floor, every footstep announcing itself with a sharp crack.

As we waited, I could feel the tension settle in. It wasn’t fear. It was something deeper. The awareness that I didn’t belong. Or at the very least, stood out with my shaved head and tattoos.

We ordered a slice of pizza. No appetizers. Just a quick bite. As much as I love pizza, I couldn’t focus on food. In truth, I only cared about two things: Avoiding a fight, and finding out if the rumored car show out in the middle of nowhere was real.

So far—nothing. No sign of it.

By the time we returned outside, the sun had begun to set. In front of the parlor, a parade of black Harley-Davidsons crowded the curb. Across the street, a group of bearded men in black leather jackets huffed cigarettes, laughing and joking.

We crossed the street and walked to the end of the block. Along the way, I noticed a ’49 Mercury parked in an empty alleyway. The body had been primered, the door handles shaved, the roof chopped.

It was a show car still in the making.

Voices reverberated through the alleyway. I glanced ahead and noticed another group of men—this time, a group of young Chicanos—gathered around something just out of view.

I approached and nodded. They nodded back, then stepped aside, revealing a dropped ’37 Chevy.

In the lowrider community, American cars are highly favored over foreign cars. And when it comes to American cars, pre-World War II cars—or “bombs”—are considered the cream of the crop.

Moments later, two more lowriders pulled up. This time the cars were a Buick Regal and an Oldsmobile Cutlass (also known as “G-bodies” because the frames of the cars are ideal for hydraulics).

“Yo, Brandon!” a voice called out.

I turned around and saw a man I had met before at a car show, hanging his head outside of a white El Camino.

“What are you doing here?” I said, a mix of surprise and disbelief in my voice.

“Hop in!” he said, waving me over.

I walked around to the passenger side. In an instant, the edge I had been carrying all evening began to dull.

It was midnight now. The demographics were rapidly changing. The streets were now packed with Mexicans and Chicanos parading lowriders to an audience of white working-class families who loved every minute of it.

Everywhere I looked I saw lowriders. Candy paint speckling under the street lamps, hydraulics hissing in the breeze, engines rumbling low. It wasn’t one or two cars—it was a complete takeover, as if the night had quietly handed itself over to them.

I began to see what all of the buzz was about. I had been to a lot of car shows in my life, but never one like this. Where did everyone come from? At midnight? In a country town? In the middle of nowhere?

The moon cast a glow across the crosswalk. As we cruised the crowded street, cell phone flashes lit up the night, cheers raged skyward, and beaming faces flooded the corners. Even the white bikers, American flags stitched to their chests, kneeled and snapped pictures.

For a moment, it was almost as if none of the things that usually divide us mattered. Not politics. Not race. Not ethnicity. The only thing that mattered was chrome, paint, and engines.

The lowrider Regal in front of us hit three-wheel-motion in the middle of the intersection, spinning cookies as two shariffs looked on with enamored faces.

On any other night, such a public and blatant disregard for traffic laws would be grounds for arrest. But not on this night. This night was different. This night was about something bigger.

When we finally left around 3am, I thought about what I had just experienced.

I thought about how quickly fear can fill in the blanks when you step into unfamiliar territory. How easy it is to assume the worst about people you don’t know. And how, just as quickly, those assumptions can fall apart when you find common ground.

Because somewhere between the lifted trucks, the Harleys, and the lowriders, the lines I thought I saw began to blur. Then eventually disappear all together.

Turns out, I was never outnumbered. We were one all along. ✔️

The story is colorful, and goes something like this:

In the mid-19th century, French explorers, fortune-seekers, and a few idealists landed on Mexico’s Pacific coast in search of gold and glory. Some had permission; others didn’t. They rarely found what they came for. Many were arrested or executed.

But a few, inspired by the spirit of Humboldt, wandered the verdant hills of what’s now Jalisco and Nayarit, taking notes on the flora, fauna, and local customs.

One day, so the tale goes, a French traveler stumbled upon a lively village wedding. “Voilà un mariage!” he supposedly cried, watching musicians play amid a crowd of revelers.

According to this version, French ears began to associate mariage—the French word for marriage—with the musicians and the festive music they heard at Mexican weddings. Pronounce them, and they sound quite similar. The name stuck, the story says, and mariachi was born.

It’s a charming story. But it isn’t true.

It’s Not Mariage

The French-origin myth gained popularity in the 20th century and became something of a folk explanation, repeated by countless tour guides, travel brochures, and storytellers. It has that fairy-tale quality people love—colonial misunderstandings, serendipity, a splash of romance. But the evidence doesn’t hold up.

And in truth, it is a little colonialist in spirit. How come an indigenous culture come up with something so successful? The implication is subtle but familiar: that an indigenous culture couldn’t have come up with something so successful. Surely, the thing must have a European involved.

In fact, it points to a much deeper, older origin—one rooted not in Europe of French visitors, but in the indigenous languages and traditions of western Mexico.

One thing we can be sure of, by the late 1800s, mariachi was already a known term in Mexican newspapers. An 1888 article mentions a mariachi group playing at a railroad inauguration. Another in 1880 describes a local cacique manipulating elections in Amatitán, Jalisco, with the help of two things: soldiers (to intimidate) and a mariachi band (to distract).

Roots in Nayarit

So far, these dates might appear to support another French-origin theory, that Napoleon III’s invading army coined the word during the brief reign of Emperor Maximilian and Empress Carlota (1864–1867). But the evidence points even further back.

In fact, the name mariachi appears decades earlier, in civil records from Nayarit. In 1833, a death certificate mentions someone born in a place called El Mariachi. Several ranchos with names like Mariachi and Mariache appear in that region. Even earlier documents describe mariachi as an occupation—meaning the word referred to a kind of performer.

Roots In The Indigenous Word

So what does mariachi actually mean?

One theory traces the word to the Coca people of central Jalisco. After the Spanish conquest, Coca musicians incorporated European instruments like the harp, guitar, and vihuela into their rituals.

Over time, their sacred music shifted toward secular themes—satirical lyrics, danceable rhythms—and became the soundtrack to weddings, baptisms, and even funerals.

Jesús The Trumpeter

There’s another legend about a poor trumpeter named Jesús who one day arrived in Cocula, Jalisco, and begged a group of musicians to let him join their mariachi group.

At first, they laughed—trumpets didn’t belong in mariachi. But Jesús persisted, following the group from gig to gig, echoing their melodies from afar. Eventually, they let him try. To everyone’s surprise, the people cheered him on. The definite mariachi sound—with ear-splitting high staccato trumpet notes—was born.

Whether the story is fact or legend, the addition of the trumpet changed mariachi forever. Some credit this shift to the radio boom of the 1920s and ’30s, especially the broadcasts of the XEW radio station in Mexico City. The trumpet’s sharp, high-pitched voice was necessary to help the music cut through static and reach a broader audience. The influence of jazz and big band music likely played a role as well.

From Local Sound To National Symbol

After the Mexican Revolution, mariachi became politically useful. Presidents from Álvaro Obregón onward used mariachi groups in their campaigns and inaugurations to signal a connection to “the people.” The music became part of the state’s nation-building efforts—rustic yet refined, rural yet national.

By the Golden Age of Mexican cinema in the 1940s and ’50s, mariachi was everywhere—on screens, in plazas, in living rooms. Singers like Jorge Negrete and Pedro Infante helped canonize it. It became not just a musical genre but a cultural register, capable of expressing nostalgia, heartbreak, macho poses, and joy in equal measure.

So what does the word really mean? Scholars like Gutierre Tibón and local chroniclers from Nayarit argued that mariachi may derive from a word used by the Coca for venado (deer) and for the speed and grace of the animal, much like the music’s rapid tempo. Others believe the word referred to a native tree whose wood was used to make early instruments. Either way, its roots run deep in western Mexico.

In 2011, UNESCO recognized mariachi as an Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity. Today, it’s one of Mexico’s most global exports.

So no, mariachi is not a French word.

It comes from somewhere deeper, somewhere older, closer to the soul.

There is a conversation happening in Mexican American communities right now. A conversation that might not make it into news headlines, but lives at family cookouts.

It’s a conversation about identity, pride, and a growing sense that something meaningful has been lost.

Some call it cultural drift. Others call it evolution. But in the eyes of many Mexican Americans, the rise of the “Edgar Generation” feels less like progress, and more like decline and disconnect.

Is there still time to correct course?

The Old School Way

To be clear, I grew up in the ‘80s and ‘90s. I won’t pretend to be neutral on the topic. By fifteen, I was already building lowrider Impalas, shining my Stacy Adams, and starching my khakis. Leaving the house with wrinkled clothing was unthinkable.

Then again, I didn’t know any better. The older generations I learned from carried themselves with a distinct sense of identity. Presentation mattered. Style wasn’t just about looking good—it was about discipline and pride, shaped by influences like prison, the military, and hard labor.

Language mattered. The homeboys I knew spoke caló—something you couldn’t fake or casually pick up. It was layered and generational. A true polyglot slang built over time. When someone spoke it, every word had weight.

Every phrase had rhythm. Every expression carried history.

But above all, we valued loyalty. Brotherhood. Family. Respect. We didn’t have to be loud to be seen. Confidence came from how you carried yourself, not how much attention you demanded.

A New Generation

The contrast today couldn’t be more stark. The new “Edgar Generation,” known for funny bowl-haircuts, tattered skinny jeans, designer brands, and Tik-Tok braggadocio, has little in common with past generations.

Aesthetics have gone from disciplined to disheveled. Expensive labels have replaced earned respect. Clout has replaced quiet confidence. Social media followers have replaced authentic community.

The language has also changed. The casual use of the “N-word” is particularly baffling. Not only does it sound stupid when someone uses it, but it is deeply disconnected from the values older generations held. Back in the day there were certain lines you didn’t cross. Not out of fear, but out of pride and respect.

That pride and respect no longer exists.

But the deeper issue isn’t just the shift within the culture, it’s how that shift is being perceived from the outside. Multiple videos have now popped up on the internet with people expressing nostalgia for the laid-back vibe of old school cholos when compared to the new generation, which speaks to just how much things have changed.

Will we ever see real cholos again? Doubtful.

The Prison Boom

This change wasn’t random. It was rooted in forces that reshaped entire communities. In the ‘80s and ‘90s, mass incarceration exploded under mandatory minimum laws, taking a generation of men out of their neighborhoods.

Fathers, uncles, older brothers—gone overnight.

In their place, a void. Nobody to put wayward youth “in check,” pass down customs, or show them the right way.

Then came the internet. Social media. Algorithms. External influences that lacked context. Young people began shaping their identities not from lived experience on the neighborhood block, but from fragmented inputs. Bits and pieces of different cultures, stitched together without meaning or roots.

The result? A generation without an anchor. Without meaning. Without culture.

History Matters

Let me be clear: I’m not defending gang culture. I changed my life for a reason. But reducing cholo or pachuco culture to nothing more than criminality also misses the point.

What people often overlook is that pachuco and cholo subcultures were built on resilience, creativity, historical events, and deeply rooted customs. There was a code. A structure. A deeper identity that went beyond what outsiders chose to see.

In the end, that identity couldn’t be contained. It moved beyond the neighborhood. From Los Angeles to Tokyo, it redefined fashion, influenced music, and left its mark on art worldwide.

Its impact was undeniable.

Old school cholos didn’t need to be loud or chase attention. They commanded it through presence, through discipline, through a clear sense of who they were.

That has all changed.

What happens next? I don’t know. But I know forty years from now, pachuco and cholo culture will continue to be emulated.

By contrast, the “Edgar” era will be treated as a shallow and fleeting internet trend that left long lasting damage in its wake. Something we will all one day look back on with embarrassment.

I also know that history and tradition matters. Because within that history lies a blueprint—not for going backwards, but for holding onto what made the culture meaningful in the first place.

The question is whether we choose to remember that history. ✔️

Rodolfo “Rudy” Acuña, a pioneering historian, activist, and educator who helped establish Chicano Studies as a respected academic discipline, died this week at age 93. His passing marks the loss of a figure widely regarded as one of the intellectual architects of Latino studies in the United States.

Born in Los Angeles in 1932 to Mexican immigrant parents, Acuña’s early experiences with discrimination shaped a lifetime of advocacy. He went on to build a career that blended scholarship with activism, challenging traditional narratives in American history and pushing universities to recognize the experiences of Mexican Americans.

In 1969, Acuña founded one of the nation’s first Chicano Studies programs at California State University, Northridge, where he would teach for nearly five decades. His most influential work, Occupied America: A History of Chicanos, published in 1972, became a cornerstone text in classrooms across the country. The book reframed U.S. history through the lens of Mexican American experiences, helping generations of students better understand issues of race, power, and cultural identity.

Acuña was also known for his outspoken and often controversial voice. He criticized systemic racism in higher education and challenged both political institutions and fellow scholars when he believed they failed to address inequality. His willingness to confront uncomfortable truths earned him admiration from students and colleagues, as well as critics.

Beyond the classroom, Acuña’s impact extended into activism and public discourse. He wrote extensively, mentored thousands of students, and even pursued legal action against academic discrimination—later using the settlement to fund scholarships for future scholars in the field.

At its core, Acuña’s work was driven by a belief that education could empower marginalized communities. He viewed Chicano Studies not just as an academic field, but as a tool for cultural awareness, pride, and social change.

Last week, an investigative report by The New York Times detailing alleged sexual misconduct by the late labor activist Cesar Chavez detonated like a political bomb, sending shockwaves through the Mexican American community and igniting a fierce national debate about accountability.

But as the controversy unfolded, something else became impossible to ignore: Within hours of the allegations, Chavez’s name was essentially wiped from public life. Parks renamed. Murals painted over. Statues torn down. It was as if decades of history were instantly scrubbed across the nation—all before the nation had time to process what it meant.

In California, political leaders moved with uncharacteristic urgency. The same machinery that often stalls on housing, infrastructure, and disaster recovery, suddenly operated at breakneck speed.

When was the last time politicians moved this fast and effectively on anything? The efficiency and vigor alone should raise eyebrows: Was this truly a spontaneous reckoning, or a deliberately coordinated effort?

To be clear, allegations can be backed by credible evidence, and at the same time be weaponized to advance a broader political agenda. What remains less clear is the political agenda.

A Man Not Short On Political Enemies

Chavez was not without critics. The far right opposed him for his labor activism and economic power. The far left bristled at his hardline views on illegal immigration and willingness to break with progressive orthodoxy. He was not a figure who fit neatly into ideological boxes.

Yet even his harshest detractors would not deny that he was an extraordinarily effective organizer, a man who built a movement where none existed and forced a nation to pay attention. Yet in the span of days, that history has been all but erased by allegations now dominating headlines.

Chief among the accusers is fellow labor activist Dolores Huerta, who has leveled serious and deeply troubling claims about Chavez who she worked alongside for years. Huerta, who also has four children with the younger brother of Chavez, now portrays him as a predator who once assaulted her in a vehicle near a field.

But this raises more difficult questions: Why is the media treating Huerta’s account as definitive? Chavez, after all, is no longer here to respond, challenge, or offer his own version of events. The absence of that counterweight makes the rush to judgment all the more consequential.

As I stated in a vlog last week, I do think at least some of the evidence presented by The New York Times is compelling. It includes decades’ worth of letters and emails that appear to corroborate allegations of misconduct involving young girls. That cannot be ignored or waved away.

But what are we to make of Huerta, someone who spent decades publicly championing Chavez? What changed? Why now? What incentive exists today that didn’t exist ten years ago?

Any responsible journalist or opinion writer should be asking these questions.

Huerta’s Claims Come Amid Legal Troubles Of Her Own

According to a 2025 complaint filed in Los Angeles County Superior Court, a plaintiff by the name of Ruth Sanchez is suing the Dolores C. Huerta Foundation, alleging a wide range of workplace violations tied to disability discrimination and retaliation.

The lawsuit claims the organization failed to accommodate her disability, did not engage in a required interactive process, and retaliated against her for asserting her rights under California’s Fair Employment and Housing Act.

The complaint further alleges that the foundation failed to prevent discrimination and fostered an environment that ultimately led to unlawful treatment.

In addition to discrimination claims, the filing accuses the foundation of multiple labor law violations, including failure to provide meal and rest breaks, unpaid wages, and failure to issue final pay upon termination.

Sanchez also alleges wrongful termination in violation of public policy and unfair business practices. The lawsuit seeks damages and a jury trial, signaling a potentially high-stakes legal battle over workplace protections and employee rights.

Is it a coincidence that Huerta’s public claim about Chavez comes just months after facing a private lawsuit of her own?

Ongoing Internal Conflict Within UFW

While Chavez was still alive, it appears he was fully aware of the fact that allegations of sexual misconduct could be weaponized to derail his organization and work.

According to historian Matt Garcia in his 2012 book “From the Jaws of Victory: The Triumph and Tragedy of Cesar Chavez and the Farm Worker Movement,” Huerta, as vice president of the United Farm Workers in the late 1970s, sometimes framed internal dissent as conspiracies involving personal and sexual relationships.

Accounts in the book, as highlighted by Civil Rights attorney Laura Powell on Sunday, also describe Chavez expressing concerns that critics were attempting to manipulate or infiltrate union leadership through romantic involvement, reflecting a broader climate of suspicion within the organization.

The book’s Chapter 8, titled “Some Were More Equal Than Others,” a reference to Animal Farm, examines internal tensions and the consolidation of power during a turbulent period for the union.

It alleges that such suspicions sometimes influenced personnel decisions, with accusations tied to relationships or sexuality used to remove perceived opponents, even when evidence was limited. These dynamics, Garcia suggests, contributed to internal conflict and instability within the UFW during its later years.

Conflicts that still shape political decisions today.

A Bold, Puzzling Decision

For years, Huerta helped build and sustain Chavez’s legacy in the public imagination. That history matters, and raises difficult but necessary questions about timing, motive, and credibility.

Huerta has also spent decades benefiting politically, professionally, and financially from her association with Chavez before leveling recent claims. That alone does not invalidate her account, but it should invite scrutiny.

The New York Times similarly made a bold decision: to pour time, money, and manpower into investigating a man who has been dead for 30 years. In a newsroom full of urgent, living stories demanding attention, the paper chose to elevate this decades-old tale above everything else.

The question remains: why?

Personally, I see Huerta as far more complex than the damsel-in-distress narrative the media is painting. Like Chavez, she is politically astute, has her share of detractors, and is prone to self-aggrandizement. On one hand, she may very well be a victim. On the other, one could easily argue that over the years she has drifted out of step with the movement she once helped build.

The same movement that the government and media is now jointly erasing with her blessing.

Historical Revisionism

To be fair, I have never been comfortable with tearing down statues or “canceling” controversial figures, even those I personally dislike. It smacks of historical revisionism. I think the better solution is to stop placing people on pedestals to begin with.

It’s also worth noting that the revelations regarding Chavez come as the Chicano movement is experiencing a resurgence, and as Latino communities increasingly express frustration with both major political parties.

What better way to demoralize and create division than by deconstructing beloved leaders? Than re-writing history books to stifle future generations?

I was as disappointed as anyone to learn about some of the accusations involving Chavez. Again, some of the evidence is compelling. Yet I have serious reservations about what appears to be a coordinated effort across the nation to erase him from history, and sweep aside decades of work in the process.

If history were forged by angels, there would be no hell to overcome. Chavez was not perfect, and neither is the movement he inspired. The question is whether this situation is being exploited for political ends, and we can find the courage to reckon with his flaws while still honoring the work that made progress possible in the first place. ✔️
