Gallego Faces Fresh Scrutiny Over Past Actions

The exhibit spans generations of artists while examining themes that continue to shape conversations across the country.

Curators say many of the issues presented in the artwork remain just as relevant today as when many of the pieces were first created. The exhibition invites visitors to reflect on the evolving Chicano experience through paintings, sculptures, prints, and mixed-media installations.

My decade as a member of a Mexican American street gang was explosive. I learned how to fight. I learned how to dodge bullets. I learned how to elude police.

Yet despite the intimidating glares, shaved heads, and tattooed faces, there was something strangely endearing about the gang members I knew. Something far more complex and closer to home than most people realize. A world brimming with classic cars, music, and art.

Something unmistakably American like Apple Pie.

Understanding the origins of Mexican American street gangs (and the Central American street gangs they influenced on the surface) is crucial to curbing the violence often associated with them.

Contrary to portrayal, the world’s largest street gangs not only originated on American soil in response to widespread discrimination and rampant nationalism, but spread to the rest of the world as a result of overactive immigration policies. And until the federal government acknowledges the failure of these policies, the true catalyst behind these problems can never be addressed.

War and Nationalism

You can’t talk about street gangs without talking about Mexican American street gangs, whose American origins run deep. Unlike white and black gangs, Mexican American street gangs transcend economic class, geography, and even centuries. In fact, some of the oldest Mexican American cliques date back to the late 1890s (Dog Town Rifa, for example), roughly 70 years before the Crips or Bloods, and almost 30 years before the first Outlaw Motorcycle gang.

Many of these same cliques not only still operate in the same neighborhoods, outlasting both the Irish and Italian gangs that began at the same time, but have withstood repeated attempts by the federal government to root them out (38th Street, Big Hazard, and White Fence, for example). It’s an impressive feat. However, if you understand the cultural impact Mexican American gangs have had on American gang culture—and American culture in general—it’s not surprising.

As Leon Bing wrote in her book, Do or Die, which Luis J. Rodriguez subsequently quoted in his famous memoir, Always Running: “It was the cholo homeboy who first walked the walk and talked the talk. It was the Mexican American pachuco who initiated the emblematic tattoos, the signing with hands, the writing of legends on walls.”

But with a few exceptions, the cliques of the early 1900s weren’t the violent criminal street gangs we know today. Forced into segregated communities and widely discriminated against during a time when the American Southwest was in the middle of a turbulent transformation, young Mexican Americans primarily banded together out of self-preservation and common interests—not criminal intent. Some found identity through family surnames and close-knit neighborhoods. Others found brotherhood through car clubs and the zoot suit subculture of African American jazz music.

Seeking respect and recognition, Mexican American Pachucos openly adopted the flamboyant “wide-legged” style associated with zoot suits. But as nationalist sentiment soared, American sailors began hunting down and attacking Pachucos over social and cultural differences. On one hand, sailors considered zoot suits to be unpatriotic during a time of war rationing. On the other, sailors viewed Mexican Americans as traitors and invaders despite being born in the United States.

Tensions eventually boiled over following a highly publicized incident at a popular swimming hole known as “Sleepy Lagoon” in Southern California. During the incident, a young Mexican American named José Díaz was found stabbed with a fractured skull on the side of the road. He later died. Following his death, widespread panic ensued, and officials began labeling all Pachucos and groups of young Mexican American males as criminal “gangs.” In response, the government rounded up some 600 Mexican Americans across Los Angeles, culminating in the wrongful conviction of 17 Mexican American youth, and later spawning the infamous Zoot Suit Riots.

The incident at Sleepy Lagoon in 1942 and subsequent Zoot Suit Riots in 1943 were major flash points in the evolution of modern Latino street gangs. Following the riots, distrust of law enforcement skyrocketed, and Mexican Americans began protecting their neighborhoods from outsiders the same way outsiders had protected their neighborhoods from them. Worse, as drugs flooded the streets a few decades later and divisions between neighborhoods grew, rivalries intensified. Cliques became gangs. Barrios became war zones. The modern day Cholo (a Mexican American gang member) was born.

In 1943, all of the pachucos from the incident at Sleepy Lagoon had their cases overturned and reentered society (see People v Zammora 66 Cal.App.2d 166). These pachucos would go on to become heroes across Los Angeles. Some have speculated that this mix of pachuco and prison fashion, along with military and labor fashion, is what laid the foundation for one of the most recognizable and distinct gang fashions in the 70s-90s (white t-shirts, creased pants, shaved head, dark sunglasses etc.).

Failed Immigration Policies

Throughout the mid and late 20^th century, Mexican American street gangs grew in sophistication, adopted distinct customs and—contrary to widespread belief—initially discriminated against immigrants from Mexico and Central America. As a result, many immigrants were forced to adopt American gang culture or form their own gangs to survive.

This divide, and the debate over whether immigrants from Mexico or Central America should be allowed to join Mexican American gangs, ultimately led to the formation and growth of some of the largest transnational gangs in the world—each which recruited immigrants and went on to expand beyond the confines of their traditional neighborhoods.

Divisions escalated both on the streets and in the prison system. On one hand, Mexican American gang members viewed Mexican and Central American immigrants, many who had fled to the United States to find work, as unsophisticated and subservient. On the other, immigrants viewed Mexican American gang members as “Americanized Hispanics”—or Pochos—who had forgotten their culture and roots.

In response, the federal government implemented strict mass deportation policies, not too unlike policies advocated today by conservatives. But the move was rash and didn’t take into account the complex social constructs of gangs. As a result, the federal government not only failed to curb gang activity in American cities like Los Angeles, but exported American gang culture to places it had never previously existed—places like Mexico, Honduras and El Salvador.

While in Mexico, gang members lost stature due to local aversion and powerful cartels, in places like El Salvador—which was in the midst of a bloody civil war at the time—gang members became militarized and empowered. Today El Salvador is home to over 60,000 militarized gang members—none that existed until the United States exported American gang culture. Now, thousands of innocent civilians attempt to escape the violence each year, which claims more than 3,000 lives.

American As Apple Pie

Some of these same gang members have since tried to return to the United States, leading politicians to believe that deportation is again the answer. But it isn’t. The truth is undocumented gang members represent a minuscule fraction of total gang membership in the United States, and Central American gang members represent an even smaller faction. For perspective, Los Angeles county alone still remains home to more than 50,000 gang members—the majority of which are not Central American.

Too often, the media generalizes gang members of Latino origin, lumping Mexican American and Central American gang members into one phenomenon. But while central American gang culture was certainly influenced by Mexican American gang culture on the aesthetic level (as many gangs have been), the two have very different histories. More importantly, the two come from two very different social environments, and operate by sets of very different rules.

Since the 90s, one could argue that Mexican American gang culture in the United States has become a lucrative pop culture phenomenon at the demand of American consumers.

On social media, YouTube shows such as “Cholos Try” have amassed huge followings and landed television deals. In music, Chicano rap has spawned hundreds of artists and record labels. And in film and apparel, major multinational corporations ranging from Warner Bros to Nike have commissioned artwork from Mexican American artists whose style reflect Chicano gang culture.

Like most things that involve capitalism, the result has been a double-edged sword. On one hand, the advent of technology has probably done more to curb gang violence than any government program. On the other hand, it has also watered down many other aspects of Chicano culture, while perpetuating stereotypes.

The Trump administration didn’t help. Like the 1940s, hysterics and a new wave of populism have again led to discrimination and dangerous nationalist rhetoric. With this, facts have been skewed and statistics muddled. But context is crucial. Though gang violence has spiked in recent years, it has plummeted over the past two decades, largely due to non-profit outreach, and the advent of technology. In fact, one could argue we are living in one of the most peaceful times in history.

This doesn’t mean gang violence doesn’t exist. It does. But before addressing gangs, we must first start with addressing the underlying social conditions that produce and fuel gangs, which begins by first acknowledging the failures of past government policies and sentiments. It was the Pachuco roundups of the 1940s and deportations of the 1990s, after all, that resulted in the unintended consequences we continue to deal with today. How much sense does it make to repeat them?

After all, cholos are as American as Apple Pie.

Houston ICE Shooting Sparks Questions 🚨

Federal and local authorities are investigating the fatal shooting of 52-year-old Lorenzo Salgado Araujo by U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agents during an enforcement operation in Houston. Latino Identity Divide Reshapes Political Landscape

A new Pew Research Center survey found that Latino Americans hold widely differing views about how their ethnic identity affects their daily lives, reflecting growing political and cultural diversity within the nation’s Hispanic population. A Handful Of Senate Races

National strategists in both parties are increasingly focused on a handful of Senate and House races that could become the defining battlegrounds of the cycle. In the Senate, competitive contests in states with volatile suburban voters and shifting demographic coalitions are attracting early attention.

States like Georgia, Arizona, Michigan, and Pennsylvania remain perennial targets because they represent stress tests for both parties’ coalitions.

The House map may be even more consequential. Unlike Senate races, House control often comes down to a few dozen districts where political identities are messy and contradictory.

These are places where voters may support a Republican for Congress but back a Democrat for governor—or vice versa.

Suburban districts around major metro areas remain especially volatile. So do working-class districts where economic anxiety increasingly outweighs traditional partisan loyalty.

That volatility explains why donors are already opening their wallets.

Large-dollar donors, wealthy individuals, industry PACs, and institutional political groups, tend to move early. They are less interested in headlines and more interested in probabilities. Right now, donor behavior suggests several emerging priorities.

Follow The Money

First, both parties are heavily investing in candidate recruitment. Money is flowing not just to campaigns, but to identifying candidates who can outperform national party brands. In swing districts, charisma and local credibility matter more than ideology.

Second, issue-based funding is accelerating around a few core themes: abortion, border security, housing affordability, and cost of living. These are the issues donors believe can move persuadable voters—not because they dominate social media, but because they dominate kitchen-table conversations.

Third, outside groups are preparing for a messaging war centered on economic trust.

Voters may express ideological preferences in polling, but elections are often decided by a simpler question: Which party seems more capable of governing?

The challenge for Democrats is that defending incumbency often means owning public frustration. The challenge for Republicans is that opposition is easier than persuasion; anger mobilizes a base but can alienate swing voters.

This creates an unusual environment for 2026.

Controlling The Narrative

The invisible campaign underway today is really a contest over narrative. Democrats want the midterms framed as a referendum on stability, rights, and institutional competence. Republicans want them framed as a referendum on affordability, immigration, and public dissatisfaction.

The side that wins the framing war early may shape the battlefield before most voters are even paying attention.

That’s why the smartest political observers aren’t obsessing over today’s national approval numbers. They’re tracking donor memos, field investments, and private strategy meetings.

Because by the time campaign ads flood your screen in 2026, the battle lines may already be set.

Interesting fact: Every acting U.S. president since Truman has visited Mexico, except Donald Trump.

Since Gerald Ford, the visit to Mexico has been a foreign priority, and the presidents made it within their first months in office.

Obama visited Mexico five times, George Bush Jr. six times, Bill Clinton twice, Bush the father once, and Reagan six.

Starting with Truman, who was in Mexico on four occasions, each one has recognized in Mexico an ally, an opportunity and one of the main objectives of U.S. foreign policy. They have demonstrated this with official and informal visits, even if traditionally US presidents are not big travelers, and they pass their time in office without stopping by most of the countries of the world.

All except Donald Trump, who not only never visited Mexico as president —he also tried to literally put a wall between both nations.

The First Traveler

Many years before Harry S. Truman, another head of state spent a few hours in Mexico, met with his Mexican colleague, and became the first US president to visit the country. Not counting Theodore Roosevelt’s visit to the Panama Canal in 1906, William Taft’s would also be the first acting president to leave the U.S.

A couple of photographs, and even a film, saved the first meeting for posterity, showing Taft and the so-called Strong Man of the Americas, Mexican Porfirio Díaz.

It happened in two stages on the 16th of October of 1909. The first handshake took place in Texas, at the El Paso Chamber of Commerce, and was strictly private. Later, Taft agreed to cross the border to meet Porfirio Díaz at the Ciudad Juárez customs office. “You are, to my knowledge,” said the old general to his neighbor, “the first US premier to visit this land.”

The Two Presidents

The first Mexico-United States summit occurred at a delicate moment. In Díaz’s country, a Revolution was about to break out. The United States wanted a larger share of foreign direct investment in Mexico, which had turned its eyes to Europe.

But the atmosphere in Ciudad Juárez and El Paso did not reflect any apprehension. The two cities were brimming with intertwined flags, marching bands, and celebrations. Taft was greeted with twenty-one cannon blasts. From there he went to a banquet, “one of the most notable that has taken place in the American continent” according to a newspaper of the time.

The presidents’ attire contrasted. Díaz appeared with his coat full of military medals. Taft was soberly dressed, without any condecorations. One could be the other´s father, but both looked the same age.

During the meal, the presidents sat side by side, probably little aware of the significance of that first meeting. Díaz did not speak English. Taft knew a few Spanish words that he had learned in the Philippines. At the end of the meeting, the president of the United States extended his hand to Díaz and said: “Hasta que nos volvamos a encontrar otra vez.“

Taft returned to Texas amid a cascade of fireworks and escorted by Mexican soldiers. By this point, the secret services of both countries must have breathed easy: days before, they had been warned that someone would try to assasinate both Taft and Díaz.

The Shooter

During the presidential meeting, a combination of Texas Rangers, U.S. and Mexican troops, Secret Service agents, FBI agents, and U.S. Marshals were on maximum alert.

In the States, the FBI had notified the chief of the Secret Service, John Elbert Wilkie, that they were aware of an attempt to kill Taft in Mexico. The plot was allegedly dissolved when the Chicago police arrested some anarchists a few days before the meeting, but the heavy security arrangements were kept for the visit.

On the day Díaz visited El Paso, a Texas Ranger, Private CR Moore, saw a man concealing a “pencil pistol”, standing along the route of both presidents. The man was arrested just in time when the two heads of state were passing by. According to other versions, the police arrested the shooter in Ciudad Juarez a few steps away from the heads of state.

A Bitter Realization

It is not known what both presidents talked about in their private meeting besides a few minor issues related to the Rio Grande. They were mainly interested in sending a message of peaceful coexistence, optimism and opulence.

The following decades would be a bitter realization that none of those things was going to happen for a long time. Actually, Taft would be one of the most interventionist presidents in Mexican affairs.

There would be no more U.S. presidential visits until 1943, when FDR —then the busiest man in the world— visited Manuel Ávila Camacho in the midst of World War II.

Joe Biden has promised to work more closely to resolve the myriad of issues that plague both nations, separated like never before in the four years of Trump’s presidency.

This may or may not be good news: Mexicans know that after four years of estrangement, four years of interventionism could follow. Biden has to find that delicate balance.

Most people know Joan Baez as the voice of protest music. Far fewer know that her father, Albert Vinicio Baez, was a pioneering Mexican-American physicist whose work helped shape modern X-ray imaging.

But Baez’s significance extends beyond the laboratory. At a moment when many of the world’s brightest physicists were being drawn into weapons research and military programs, he made a different choice. He turned away from that world and devoted much of his life to education, peace advocacy, and humanitarian work.

He Helped Humans See The Invisible

Born in Puebla, Mexico, in 1912, Baez immigrated to the United States as a child and grew up in Brooklyn. He began as a mathematician before turning to physics, eventually earning a doctorate from Stanford at a time when the field was rapidly reshaping the modern world.

At Stanford, working with physicist Paul Kirkpatrick, Baez tackled one of X-ray science’s central challenges: how to focus radiation that resists conventional lenses. Their solution, using grazing-incidence mirrors to direct X-rays with unprecedented precision, became known as the Kirkpatrick-Baez configuration, a breakthrough that helped lay the foundation for modern X-ray imaging.

The significance of that breakthrough extended far beyond the laboratory. By making it possible to focus X-rays with far greater precision, Baez’s work helped unlock imaging at scales that had previously been out of reach.

The technology became essential to X-ray microscopy, synchrotron research, and eventually astrophysics, allowing scientists to study structures ranging from individual cells to distant cosmic phenomena.

When The Cold War Came Calling, He Said No

By the 1950s, physics had become inseparable from geopolitics. The scientists who had unlocked the atom were now among the most sought-after figures in America, courted by universities, government laboratories, and defense contractors alike.

Baez had every reason to join them. He had the credentials, the technical expertise, and access to the same opportunities that drew many of his contemporaries into military research.

Instead, after a brief period of classified defense work, he chose to leave. Increasingly troubled by the role science was playing in the arms race, Baez turned away from weapons research and devoted himself to teaching and humanitarian work.

The decision would shape the rest of his career. At a time when scientific progress was often measured in strategic advantage, Baez argued that science should be judged by a different standard: its capacity to improve human life.

He Believed Science Education Could Change Nations

Baez’s interests extended well beyond the laboratory. Over time, he became increasingly committed to science education, particularly in parts of the world with limited access to research infrastructure.

Through his work with UNESCO, he helped strengthen physics education internationally, including efforts to develop scientific programs in Baghdad.

He was guided by a conviction that scientific knowledge should not be concentrated in wealthy countries or elite institutions. For Baez, access to science was inseparable from social progress.

He often described his educational philosophy through what he called the “three Cs”: curiosity, creativity, and compassion. The inclusion of that last quality is telling. For Baez, scientific rigor alone was not enough; knowledge, he believed, carried an ethical obligation.

Legacy Bigger Than Physics

When Albert Baez died in 2007 at 94, he left behind a legacy that extended well beyond physics. His contributions to X-ray optics helped shape modern imaging science, but his influence cannot be measured by technical achievement alone.

What distinguished Baez was the seriousness with which he approached the ethical responsibilities of scientific work. At a time when physics was deeply entangled with military power, he insisted that scientific progress and moral judgment were not competing values.

That perspective feels especially relevant now. As artificial intelligence, biotechnology, and other emerging technologies advance at extraordinary speed, the debate is no longer simply about what can be built, but about what should be built—and to whose benefit.

Baez spent much of his life grappling with that question. His answer was less ideological than practical: science, at its best, should expand human possibility rather than diminish it.

That conviction shaped both his career and the example he left behind.

Former president Herbert Hoover said this in 1944 when young Americans were dying in World War 2. But it is a timeless truth that applies in every nation and every epoch.

The Second World War was an incredibly painful conflict, but the young men who fought it came back home to be honored as heroes. This would not be true for many of those who fought for the United States in the armed conflicts that were to follow. Especially Vietnam, a war that divided the country and shattered an entire generation.

We have heard many of the tragic stories from the Vietnam War. But we have rarely seen how the devastating conflict impacted the lives of Latinos and Chicanos - until now.

The Vietnam War

In Soul Sacrifice, a play currently running at the Casa 101 Theater in Boyle Heights, we are given a chance to see how the Vietnam War impacted one Chicano family and the long-term tragedy that it left in its wake.

Written by playwright Consuelo G. Flores and directed by Kenneth Castillo, it is a heart-wrenching work that transcends cultural and generational divides. And it uncovers the often-forgotten history of Latino soldiers in Vietnam and the struggles of war protestors from the Chicano community back at home.

The play follows the Flores family in the 1960s and 1970s, whose simple world is turned upside down by a conflict in Southeast Asia that is far removed from their daily struggles as working-class Mexican immigrants to the United States.

Bookended by the funeral of one of the family members, the play flashes back to a happier time when 9-year-old Connie spends her afternoons reading the newspaper to her father Jose, who works at a slaughterhouse to provide for his devoutly religious wife Guadelupe and their older children.

Rachel, a teenage girl who is more interested in building a family with her first love than in going to college as her mother wants for her. Ben, who is an idealistic youth that dreams of becoming a lawyer and fighting for immigrant rights. And Luis, a good-hearted boy that is dedicated to being the glue that holds the family together.

Lives Upended

But their normal lives are upended when Luis is drafted and sent to Vietnam, where he endures horrific tragedies that leave him emotionally scarred. While Luis fights overseas, Ben joins the battle at home as activist groups rally Chicano immigrants to protest a war that is seeing a disproportionate number of casualties among its brown and black soldiers.

The intense politicization of the conflict threatens to tear the family apart, with Jose opposing Ben’s activism even as Guadelupe prays fervently for Luis to come home alive and in one piece.

Luis does return physically whole, but he is psychologically damaged and suffering from PTSD which makes him prone to violent and unpredictable behavior that soon threatens the safety of his loved ones. Luis is forced to choose between staying at home with his frightened family, or running away for their own safety.

And his choices forever change the once happy Flores home.

A Powerful Play

The show is a powerful and intimate look at the devastation that war leaves in the hearts and minds of those who return from the battlefield, and may be difficult to watch for those whose own families have been torn apart by recent conflicts in the Middle East.

But it is exactly because those conflicts are happening again right now that Soul Sacrifice is a desperately needed examination of what may be facing those who are about to enter the latest cycle of Abel and Cain, where brother kills brother.

Playwright Flores’s haunting script is based on her own family’s experiences, and the authenticity shows in the dialogue and emotional impact of the story. Castillo’s directing is top notch, with the play feeling kinetic even on a small stage in Boyle Heights. And his casting choices are superb. Every single actor felt like the perfect person for the role.

I especially admired Martin Morales, whose performance as Jose alternates from affectionate, to humorous, to imperious and proud – the full range of a man who suffers regular humiliation as a Mexican immigrant while refusing to let his dignity be sacrificed even as he spends his days toiling to feed his family.

As the son of an immigrant father who went through many of the same struggles, Morales made me remember my late dad and tear up several times.

I strongly encourage people of all backgrounds and ages to go see Soul Sacrifice. Sadly, its message of surviving the brutality of war and its aftermath is needed just as much today as it was sixty years ago.

And this play will haunt you and make you think long after the curtain falls.
