Colorado Introduces New Chicano License Plate
The license plate was approved by Colorado Governor Jared Polis last year, and became available this year.
Colorado drivers now have the option to purchase a vibrant new license plate celebrating Chicana/o culture, featuring a pair of clasped brown hands set against a backdrop of mountains and a sunburst sky.
The plate, which is available for both cars and motorcycles, highlights the state's growing recognition of its Chicano heritage.
Jose Ortega, executive director of El Movimiento Sigue, a Pueblo-based organization, is spearheading efforts to collect donations for the plate. Ortega explained that the funds generated from the one-time fee for the special plate will be used to support youth programs across Colorado.
He also emphasized that the creation of the plate was a long-awaited achievement, with Chicano veterans and movement leaders in the state working for years to make it a reality.
The license plate was officially approved by Colorado Governor Jared Polis in June of last year, and as of January 1, it became available to drivers through the state's Department of Motor Vehicles.
