CONGRESS APPROVES CONTROVERSIAL LAKEN RILEY ACT
The U.S. House of Representatives last week passed a bill that mandates the detention of undocumented immigrants accused of committing theft or violent crimes, marking a significant victory for President Donald Trump’s immigration agenda.
The legislation, known as the Laken Riley Act, was approved with limited bipartisan support, underscoring the growing partisan divide over the country’s immigration policies.
The Laken Riley Act, named in memory of Laken Riley, a nursing student from Georgia who was murdered last year by a Venezuelan national, reflects the dramatic shift in the national debate on immigration.
MEXICAN PRESIDENT REVERSES DECISION TO DENY DEPORTEES
Mexico blocked a U.S. military flight carrying deportees on Thursday before reversing its decision hours later highlighting ongoing diplomatic friction between the two countries over immigration policy.
The temporary halt delayed one of the Trump administration’s deportation plans, although two other flights carrying migrants to Guatemala took off as scheduled.
Sources from the U.S. Department of Defense and other officials confirmed that the military aircraft, scheduled to land in Mexico, was denied entry, preventing the deportation of those onboard.
COLORADO INTRODUCES NEW CHICANO LICENSE PLATE
Colorado drivers now have the option to purchase a vibrant new license plate celebrating Chicana/o culture, featuring a pair of clasped brown hands set against a backdrop of mountains and a sunburst sky.
The plate, which is available for both cars and motorcycles, highlights the state's growing recognition of its Chicano heritage.
Jose Ortega, executive director of El Movimiento Sigue, a Pueblo-based organization, is spearheading efforts to collect donations for the plate. Ortega explained that the funds generated from the one-time fee for the special plate will be used to support youth programs across Colorado.
REMEMBERING THE FATHER OF CHICANO MUSIC
Ranchero music is an essential part of any self-respecting fiesta—the mariachi with their fitted pants, short boots, and wide-brimmed sombreros. Every Mexican knows the immortal themes of the genre, such as “Guadalajara or Caminos de Guanajuato,” which sing the glories of the Mexican province.
But while the bucolic towns of the Mexican Bajío may be too foreign for Americans of Mexican ancestry living on the northern side of the border, thanks to Lalo Guerrero, anybody can listen to authentic mariachi songs.
