Latino Voters and the Trump Economy: A Growing Rift
As the 2026 midterms approach, the Republican Party faces a critical challenge in retaining the support of Latino voters.
In 2024, Donald Trump’s campaign successfully captured a significant portion of the Latino vote, driven by economic concerns and immigration policies.
However, just two years into his second term, the very issues that propelled him to victory are now causing discontent among Hispanic voters, particularly small business owners.
Economic Struggles and Broken Promises
A recent survey by the U.S. Hispanic Business Council revealed that 42% of Hispanic business owners feel their economic situation has worsened under Trump’s administration, while only 24% report improvement.
The cost of living has emerged as the top concern, with 70% of respondents ranking it as a critical issue.
This marks a stark contrast to the optimism many felt during the 2024 election, when nearly two-thirds of Hispanic business owners trusted Trump over his opponent to handle the economy.
Trump’s economic policies, including tariffs and aggressive immigration enforcement, have hit Hispanic-owned businesses hard.
Growing Dissatisfaction Among Latino Voters
Polling data underscores the growing dissatisfaction among Latino voters. A November Pew Research poll found that 68% of U.S. Hispanics believe their situation has worsened over the past year, and only 9% feel it has improved.
Trump’s favorability among Hispanics has plummeted to 28%, a 13-point drop from the previous year.
The discontent among Latino voters is already influencing elections. In Passaic County, New Jersey, and Miami, Florida, areas with significant Hispanic populations, recent elections saw a decisive swing back toward Democratic candidates.
The Road Ahead
As the 2026 midterms approach, the Republican Party faces a critical challenge in retaining the support of Latino voters.
The Trump administration has attempted to counteract negative sentiment by highlighting slowing inflation rates and delivering speeches on affordability.
However, as Massey Villarreal, a Houston business executive, pointed out, these macroeconomic trends have yet to translate into tangible benefits for everyday consumers.
For many Latino voters, the question remains: will the promises of economic prosperity ever materialize, or will their disillusionment continue to grow?
