Latinos Built the America We Know Today
It is time to move beyond token acknowledgments during a designated heritage month and fully embrace the depth of Latino influence on our nation.
From the sun-drenched plazas of St. Augustine to the vibrant murals of East Los Angeles, the story of America is woven with the threads of Latino contributions.
Long before the Pilgrims arrived at Plymouth Rock, Spanish-speaking settlers were establishing cities and trade routes across what is now the American Southwest. And it was this presence that laid the groundwork for a rich mix of cultures that continue to define vast regions of the country.
Yet the impact of Latinos extends beyond these early settlements. In the fields of California and the factories of the Midwest, Latino laborers became the backbone of America’s agricultural and industrial might.
The fight for fair wages and humane working conditions, led by titans like Cesar Chavez and Dolores Huerta, sparked a transformative labor movement that secured vital rights for all American workers.
This legacy of activism and advocacy continues today.
Music, Art, and Film
In truth, the cultural landscape of the United States would be unrecognizable without Latino influence. The rhythms of salsa, cumbia, and reggaeton pulse through our cities, while the flavors of Mexican, Cuban, and Peruvian cuisine have become staples of the American palate.
In literature, art, and film, luminaries from Gabriel García Márquez to Lin-Manuel Miranda have challenged perspectives and enriched our collective imagination.
This isn’t just decoration, it is the vibrant, dynamic heart of American culture, constantly evolving and expanding because of Latino creativity.
Entrepreneurs and Business Owners
Latinos are an economic powerhouse. As entrepreneurs, they are starting businesses at a faster rate than any other demographic, creating jobs and revitalizing local economies.
As consumers, their purchasing power drives national growth.
Politically, their growing presence is also reshaping the electorate and bringing new voices to the forefront of our national dialogue, from local school boards to the halls of Congress and the Supreme Court.
Yet, despite these immense contributions, Latino communities have consistently battled systemic barriers, discrimination, and the erasure of their history.
Hispanic Heritage Month?
It is time to move beyond token acknowledgments during a designated heritage month and fully embrace the depth of Latino influence on our nation. We must actively seek out and celebrate these stories, support Latino-owned businesses, and advocate for policies that ensure equality and opportunity.
Recognizing how Latinos have shaped the United States is more than a history lesson; it’s an affirmation of who we are as a nation and a necessary step toward building a more inclusive and equitable future for everyone.
Their legacy is America’s legacy. Let’s finally give it the prominence it deserves.
