Los Angeles Archbishop Launches Program to Support Immigrant Families
The Family Assistance Program is a testament to the power of compassion and community.
In a city as diverse and vibrant as Los Angeles, the immigrant community plays a vital role in shaping its unique character. Recognizing this, Archbishop José H. Gomez of the Archdiocese of Los Angeles has announced a new initiative aimed at supporting immigrant families affected by ongoing immigration enforcement operations.
The program, unveiled during a press conference at St. Patrick's Catholic Church, seeks to provide stability and security to families living in fear of deportation. Joined by former mayoral candidate Rick Caruso and other church leaders, Archbishop Gomez emphasized the Catholic Church's commitment to standing with immigrants during these challenging times.
A Lifeline for Families in Need
The Family Assistance Program, administered through the Cardinal McIntyre Fund, will offer critical resources to families who may be hesitant to leave their homes due to fear of immigration raids.
Services include meal deliveries, groceries, and prescription medications, ensuring that families can maintain a sense of normalcy despite the uncertainty surrounding them.
“These are good, hard-working men and women,” said Archbishop Gomez. “People of faith, people who have been in this country for a long time and are making important contributions to the economy. Now, they are afraid to go to work or be seen in public in fear that they will be arrested.”
The Reality of Immigration Enforcement
Southern California has seen a heightened presence of immigration enforcement officers, with raids reported at warehouses, restaurants, and farms. These operations have left many immigrants living in constant fear, unsure of what the future holds.
Archbishop Gomez used the platform to call on lawmakers to enact meaningful immigration reform, highlighting the urgent need for systemic change.
The Archbishop’s program is not just about providing immediate relief—it’s about fostering a sense of belonging and dignity for all. In the words of Archbishop Gomez, “This diversity of traditions, languages, and experiences is what gives this city its unique character.”
