MEXICANS, CANADIANS, AND PRISONERS BATTLE NEWSOM’S INFERNO
Mexican firefighters, Canadian firefighters, Oregon firefighters, and California inmates united to battle the devastating wildfires ravaging Southern California this weekend, highlighting the state's reliance on unconventional help amid government missteps and resource mismanagement under Governor Newsom.
As of Sunday, 16 people were dead and 16 people were missing, with more winds expected through Wednesday.
In all, Mexico sent 72 firefighters to help fight the fires, while Canada sent 60 firefighters, and Oregon sent 70 firefighters. In addition, more than 900 California inmate firefighters were also deployed.
TRUMP’S BORDER CZAR DIALS BACK RHETORIC
Tom Homan, President-elect Donald Trump’s appointed border czar, has privately advised Republican lawmakers to temper their expectations regarding the incoming administration’s initial deportation efforts.
Multiple sources familiar with the conversations revealed that Homan, alongside lawmakers, has been navigating current government funding levels to devise a strategy that targets between 1 and 2 million undocumented immigrants for removal.
This approach is based on the fact that there are approximately 1.4 million people in the U.S. who currently have final orders of removal.

DECLASSIFIED CIA DOCS REVEAL SURVEILLANCE OF CHICANO ACTIVISTS
Newly declassified CIA documents obtained by Axios shed light on the agency's surveillance of Chicano activists during the 1960s and 1970s, confirming long-standing allegations of governmental monitoring of civil rights movements.
The documents, released in late December at the request of Reps. Joaquin Castro (D-TX) and Jimmy Gomez (D-CA), span from 1968 to 1983 and reveal a detailed effort to track key figures and groups within the Chicano movement.
Among the individuals scrutinized by the CIA were Denver-based activist Rodolfo "Corky" Gonzales, a prominent leader in the Chicano rights movement, and farmworker union icon César Chávez, both of whom are well-known for their advocacy for Mexican-American communities.
UTAH ELECTS 2 NEW LATINOS TO OFFICE
Utah’s political landscape was reshaped this week with the swearing-in of two Latino officials, marking a historic moment for the state’s growing Latino community.
Carlos Moreno, one of the new council members and a Republican, emphasized the growing Latino presence in Utah, calling on the community to engage more deeply in political life.
Ross Romero, who is a Democrat, was also sworn in at Monday's ceremony.
The state’s shifting demographic landscape was further reflected in last November’s elections, which saw the election of three Pacific Islanders to the Utah House.

MYTHS AND LEGENDS OF PANCHO VILLA
Pancho Villa—born Doroteo Arango—is one of Mexico's most fascinating historical figures, living and fighting between 1878 and 1923. Hundreds of books and articles have been written about him, each portraying Villa as either a hero or a child-eating ogre, depending on the author’s perspective.
This was true even during his lifetime. Many of Villa’s deeds were spread by word of mouth and transformed into legend. One such tale, for example, claims that General Villa dug up a dead man, put him on trial, and had him shot (again) to ensure proper justice.
