Portland Unveils New Chicano Mural & Chicano Graffiti Art Class
The program is designed to help Mexican American students channel their creativity.
A vibrant new Chicano-inspired mural has been unveiled in Portland, paying tribute to the Portland Timbers and adding to the city’s growing Chicano art scene.
The mural, which captures the intersection of cultural pride and local sports fandom, is part of a broader artistic movement fueled by the city's diverse communities.
In addition to the mural, the artist behind the work is leading a new graffiti after-school program called CANS (Spray Can Art Class) at Beaverton High School, located just outside of Portland.
The class, designed to teach students graffiti art techniques in a positive, constructive way, has quickly gained popularity. According to the school, approximately 90% of participants are Mexican American, reflecting the significant influence of the local Mexican and Mexican American community.
Cada Casa CANS, a related program, is helping students channel their creativity into legitimate artistic expression, turning what could be seen as risky or illegal behavior into a valuable learning opportunity.
By providing a space for artistic growth, the program aims to bridge the cultural appreciation of graffiti with the potential consequences of its unsanctioned practice.
Programs like CANS are not only empowering at-risk youth, but also fostering a sense of community, helping to build artistic skills, and providing a platform for self-expression.
The Portland suburbs, home to a large Mexican and Mexican American population, have become a hub for Chicano culture, with local businesses catering to the growing demand for Chicano streetwear and other cultural expressions.
In addition, Lowrider Magazine throws large shows at the Expo Center Portland every year, further cementing the city’s role as a center for Chicano art and culture.
The first mural can be found on the back of Sweet Home Bar & Grill in North Portland, and the second mural can be found on 14th and Taylor.
