Rep. Lori Chavez-DeRemer Tapped For Labor Secretary
Chavez-DeRemer would become the first Mexican American woman to hold the roll.
President-elect Donald Trump has selected Rep. Lori Chavez-DeRemer (R-Ore.) to serve as his Secretary of Labor, a move that could strengthen his appeal to organized labor and working-class voters following his victory in November.
Chavez-DeRemer, 56, is the second Hispanic nominee for Trump’s Cabinet, joining Sen. Marco Rubio (R-Fla.). Her appointment follows Trump’s successful outreach to Latino voters in the election, which helped him make significant gains in a demographic that has traditionally leaned Democratic.
A former Teamsters union member’s daughter, Chavez-DeRemer brings a personal connection to labor issues, which could help Trump further solidify his relationship with unions and working-class communities.
In her brief tenure in Congress, Chavez-DeRemer has developed a record that distinguishes her from the Republican Party’s usual business-friendly stance.
She was a vocal supporter of the Protecting the Right to Organize (PRO) Act, a major piece of labor legislation aimed at making it easier for workers to unionize.
She also co-sponsored a bill to protect public-sector workers from having their Social Security benefits reduced due to government pension contributions.
Chavez-DeRemer’s nomination will require Senate confirmation. The Senate, now controlled by Republicans, is expected to approve the appointment when Trump takes office on January 20, 2025, and begins sending formal nominations to Capitol Hill.
