Trump Signs Executive Order To Build Kobe Bryant Statue
The garden will also include statues of Rosa Parks, Billie Holiday, Aretha Franklin, and more.
President Donald Trump marked Black History Month at the White House with a tribute to iconic figures in American history on Thursday. In an announcement, Trump revealed plans to construct statues of notable Black figures for the National Garden of American Heroes.
The statues will honor basketball legend Kobe Bryant, abolitionist Harriet Tubman, civil rights pioneers Rosa Parks and Coretta Scott King, musical icons Billie Holiday, Aretha Franklin, and Muhammad Ali, as well as cultural heroes such as Frederick Douglass, Jackie Robinson, Martin Luther King Jr., and others.
"Today, we pay tribute to the generations of Black legends, champions, warriors and patriots who helped drive our country forward to greatness. And you really are great, great people," Trump told the crowded room at the White House Thursday.
A variety of guests attended the event, including sports and entertainment stars like former ESPN host Sage Steele, former NFL player Jack Brewer, and hip-hop artists Kodak Black, Lil Boosie, and Rod Wave. The announcement came from a source who spoke on the condition of anonymity, as they were not authorized to discuss the event publicly.
